PAHANG-SELANGOR RAW WATER TRANSFER PROJECT

in 1991, SMHB carried out the Pahang Water Resources Study which among others recommended the transfer of raw water from Pahang to Selangor via a tunnel through the Main Range mountains separating the two states.

Subsequently in 1996, SMHB in partnership with Intranswater was granted the exclusivity to develop the scheme on a privatised basis. The project was on hold until 1999 where SMHB in association with Nippon Koei Co. Ltd. of Japan were appointed for the first phase basic design of the project which was completed in year 2000.

In 2007, SMHB in association with TEPSCO of Japan and SMEC International were appointed for the second phase (detailed design and construction supervision) of the project. The main components fo the project are as follows:

  • A 5.2m dia. by 44.6km transfer tunnel from Karak to Ulu Langat to be mined by 3 TBMs and NATM drill and blast method.
  • Kelau dam with a storage of 150MCM on Sg. Kelau.
  • Semantan intake with a pumping capacity of 2260Mld below the confluence of the Kelau and Bentong rivers.
  • Twin 3.0m dia. by 11.7km pipeline to inlet portal of transfer tunnel in Karak.

The first construction package of the project, Lot 1-1 for Water Transfer Tunnel has just been awarded in May 2009. The other packages will be progressively tendered out. The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2014.
