LIFE EXTENSION PROGRAMME OF SUNGAI PERAK HYDROELECTRIC STATIONS

The Sungai Perak Hydroelectric Stations comprise five TNB’s hydroelectric stations namely Temengor, Bersia, Kenering, Chenderoh and Sungai Piah (Upper & Lower) hydroelectric stations.

The hydroelectric stations form a cascade system along the Perak River to generate electricity. Whereas, the upper and lower hydroelectric stations of Sungai Piah are served by Piah River which drain into the Kenering reservoir. The Temengor, Bersia, Kenering, Chenderoh and Sungai Piah hydroelectric stations generate about 2,254 GWh of energy annually. The combined installed capacity of these hydroelectric stations is approximately 648 MW.

The Service Level Agreement (SLA) between TNB and Regulatory Economics and Planning Division for operation and maintenance of hydroelectric stations will expire in August 2022. TNB intent to extend the life span of the hydropower stations by another 30 years after expiry of current SLA. In 2017, TNB has carried out a pre-assessment study on rehabilitation and modernisation and uprating for the hydropower stations and identified need to replace main mechanical, electrical and auxiliary equipment with anticipated minor works of associated civil structures.

Poyry-SMHB JV was appointed by TNB to re-appraise the 2017 pre-assessment report, undertake tender design, prepare tender documents and evaluation criteria, assist in tendering and evaluation, and implement capacity-building program for TNB personnel. Works on design, manufacturing, delivering, dismantling and installation will be gradually carried out from October 2021 to February 2024.

The required works target for completion are as follows:
