ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLY TO KLIA - SG. LABU OFF-RIVER STORAGE AND ASSOCIATED WORKS
The water supply to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUA) which is currently supplied from the Semenyih Water Treatment Plant has been found to be at risk of disruption. This prompted the Government through Jabatan Bekalan Air, Kementerian Tenaga, Teknologi Hijau clan Air (KeTTHA), to find alternative sources to ensure reliable and continuous water supply to the airport.
SMHB was appointed by the client to carry out a feasibility study to recommend options for alternative sources of water supply and subsequently carry out detailed design and construction supervision for the option selected by the client.
The feasibility study identified that Sg. Labu, a river system located in the vicinity of KLIA, is a potential source for the alternative water supply. The site study of the proposed intake at Sg. Labu indicated that an off-river storage can be constructed to enhance the yield from Sg. Labu. Water will be pumped into the off-river storage during wet seasons and released for use during dry periods. The storage will also improve the quality of raw water that is sent to the treatment works and this will ensure the long-term reliability of the proposed new water resource.
The Labu water supply scheme comprised the following:
- Labu off-river reservoir (30 m earthfill dam) with capacity of 9 MCM
- 140 Mld intake 1.6 km downstream of Sg. Chinchang and Sg. Labu confluence
- Water Treatment Plant with nominal output capacity of 105 Mld
- Distribution works for supply of water to the existing and future reservoirs serving KLIA.
The off-river storage was implemented by KeTTHA and the water treatment plant and distribution works by Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB).
